George Russell Wins 2026 F1 Shanghai Sprint Race in Chaotic Opener

George Russell took the chequered flag at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Race in Shanghai, claiming only his second sprint victory in Formula 1. The race delivered an extraordinary opening lap, multiple lead changes, a safety car, a penalty for Kimi Antonelli, and some of the most entertaining wheel-to-wheel racing seen in a sprint format in years.

Chaotic Start: Antonelli Gets Swallowed by the Field

The sprint got off to a dramatic start almost immediately. Kimi Antonelli, starting near the front, suffered a poor launch off the line and was swallowed by the field within the first few corners. George Russell led away cleanly, with Lewis Hamilton quickly working past Lando Norris to slot into second place.

Antonelli’s troubles were compounded when he made contact with Isack Hadjar shortly after the start. The collision earned him a 10-second time penalty, putting him firmly on the back foot before the race had really found its rhythm.

Hamilton vs Russell: The Lead Keeps Changing

The opening laps of the sprint produced some of the most entertaining Formula 1 racing of the early season. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell traded the lead multiple times in what became a genuine battle between former teammates, now representing Ferrari and Mercedes respectively.

Hamilton used the power of the Ferrari to sweep around the outside of Russell on the straight, taking the lead in a move that drew immediate praise from commentators. Russell responded, using the inside line to retake the position at Turn 1. Hamilton hit back again, using the Ferrari’s straight-line speed to get back ahead.

The back-and-forth continued lap after lap, with neither driver able to break away cleanly. Charles Leclerc also entered the mix, using the Ferrari aggressively to climb to second place, adding a Ferrari versus Ferrari dimension to an already complex race.

Verstappen Incident and Safety Car Drama

Max Verstappen provided one of the most eye-catching moments of the race by passing two cars in a single corner, only to lock up and run off the road moments later. Red Bull had double-stacked their drivers, creating complications that cost Verstappen track position.

A safety car was deployed mid-race following Nico Hulkenberg coming to a halt on track. The timing proved costly for Antonelli, who had been recovering strongly through the field. Ferrari double-stacked Hamilton and Leclerc during the pit stop window, while Mercedes serviced their cars under the same conditions.

When the green flag flew again, the gap across the start-finish line was under a second, setting up a frantic final sequence of laps.

Antonelli Fights Back After Penalty

Despite the early collision penalty and the positions lost during the safety car phase, Kimi Antonelli produced one of the more impressive individual performances of the sprint. The young Mercedes driver worked his way back through the field methodically, eventually recovering to fifth place by the finish.

He passed Oscar Piastri’s McLaren in the closing stages, though there was a brief dispute over whether Piastri had overtaken Antonelli before the start-finish line on a restart. Had that been confirmed as a pen
